Registry-based model predicts hip fracture risk better than current screening
A machine-learning tool built from Swedish national health registry data can predict hip fracture risk with high accuracy without an in-person assessment and identifies far more at-risk individuals than current clinical screening practices, according to a study published Aug. 27 in the journal PLOS Medicine by Kristian Axelsson and Mattias Lorentzon of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, and colleagues.

Aspirin matches costlier blood thinners after hip and knee replacement surgery, major trial finds
Source: Medical Xpress
Joint replacements are among the most common surgeries worldwide, and preventing blood clots is critical to recovery. A Dalhousie-led study published this month—one of the most robust of its kind to date—found that a straightforward treatment following surgery may be just as effective as a more complex one, challenging common assumptions in post-surgical care. The results could simplify care and reduce costs across health systems.

Comparative Outcomes of Resurfacing vs Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and resurfacing hip arthroplasty (RHA) are widely used for treating hip joint disorders. While THA is the gold standard for hip replacement, RHA is increasingly used in younger, active patients due to bone preservation. This systematic review and meta-analysis compare functional outcomes, metal ions, complications, revision rates, survivorship and satisfaction between THA and RHA.
